Learn About High Deductible Plan G

Medicare Supplement Plan G is one of the most comprehensive Medigap plans available to new Medicare beneficiaries (those eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020). It covers almost all out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), leaving you with very few remaining expenses.

Plan HDG does not cover:

Medicare Supplement High-Deductible Plan G (HDG) — What It Does Not Cover / How It Differs from Plan G (2026):
HDG does not pay any Medicare-approved costs until you first meet the annual high deductible, meaning you are responsible for all Medicare Part A and Part B deductibles, copays, and coinsurance out of pocket up to that amount. Unlike standard Plan G, HDG does not provide first-dollar coverage after the Part B deductible—coverage only begins once the full HDG deductible is satisfied. HDG also does not cover prescription drugs (a separate Part D plan is required) and does not include routine dental, vision, or hearing benefits. The primary difference from Plan G is the higher upfront cost exposure in exchange for typically lower monthly premiums.

Plan G covers:

High-Deductible Plan G (HDG) covers (how coverage works):

  • Part A Coinsurance & Hospital Costs: After you meet the annual HDG deductible, the plan covers 100% of Part A coinsurance and hospital costs for an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted. Until the deductible is met, you pay these costs out of pocket.
  • Part B Coinsurance or Copayment: Once the HDG deductible is satisfied, the plan covers 100% of Part B coinsurance or copayments (generally the 20% Medicare does not pay). Prior to meeting the deductible, you are responsible for these costs.
  • Blood (First 3 Pints): After meeting the HDG deductible, the plan covers the cost of the first 3 pints of blood each year. These expenses count toward the deductible if incurred beforehand.
  • Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance or Copayment: HDG covers 100% of Medicare-approved hospice coinsurance or copayments, but only after the high deductible has been met.
  • Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Care Coinsurance: Once the deductible is satisfied, HDG pays 100% of the skilled nursing facility coinsurance. SNF costs apply toward the deductible if incurred before coverage begins.
  • Part A Deductible: The Part A deductible is fully covered by HDG, but only after you meet the annual high-deductible amount. Until then, you pay it yourself and it counts toward the deductible.
  • Part B Excess Charges: After the HDG deductible is met, the plan covers 100% of Part B excess charges (up to 15% above the Medicare-approved amount), providing the same protection as standard Plan G.
  • Foreign Travel Emergency: HDG covers 80% of approved foreign travel emergency costs (subject to plan limits and lifetime maximums) after both the plan’s small foreign travel deductible and the annual HDG deductible are met.
