Medigap Plan

Learn About Medigap Plan-G

Medicare Supplement Plan G is one of the most comprehensive Medigap plans available to new Medicare beneficiaries (those eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020). It covers almost all out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), leaving you with very few remaining expenses.

Plan G does not cover:

  • Medicare Part B Deductible: This is the only gap in coverage for Plan G. You are responsible for paying the Medicare Part B annual deductible (projected to be $257 in 2025) yourself.
  • Prescription Drugs: Medigap plans, including Plan G, do not cover prescription drugs. You will need a separate Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan for this coverage.
  • Routine Vision, Dental, or Hearing: Standard Medigap plans do not cover routine dental, vision, or hearing services (like eyeglasses or hearing aids).

High-Deductible Plan G (HDG):

A high-deductible version of Plan G is also available. With this option, you pay all Medicare-covered costs (including deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments) up to a set deductible amount (projected to be $2,870 in 2025) before the plan begins to pay anything. HDG plans typically have lower monthly premiums.

Plan G covers:

  • Part A Coinsurance & Hospital Costs: Covers 100% of Part A coinsurance and hospital costs for an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted.
  • Part B Coinsurance or Copayment: Covers 100% of the Part B coinsurance or copayment, generally 20% of the Medicare-approved amount, after you meet the Part B deductible.
  • Blood (First 3 Pints): Covers the cost of the first 3 pints of blood each year.
  • Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance or Copayment: Covers 100% of the coinsurance or copayment for Medicare-approved hospice care.
  • Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Care Coinsurance: Covers 100% of the coinsurance for skilled nursing facility care.
  • Part A Deductible: Covers 100% of the Medicare Part A deductible.
  • Part B Excess Charges: This is a significant benefit of Plan G. It covers 100% of Part B excess charges (the difference between what a provider charges and the Medicare-approved amount, up to 15% above the Medicare-approved amount).
  • Foreign Travel Emergency: Covers 80% of approved foreign travel emergency costs (up to plan limits, typically after a small deductible, and a lifetime maximum).
