Medigap Plan

Learn About Medigap Plan-F

Plan F does not cover:

  • Prescription drugs (you need a Part D plan)
  • Routine dental, vision, or hearing care

A high-deductible version of Plan F is available. With this option, you pay all Medicare-covered costs until you reach the annual deductible ($2,870 in 2025). After that, the plan begins paying benefits.

If you became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020, you cannot buy Medicare Supplement Plan F. If you were eligible before that date, you can still purchase Plan F, even if you enrolled later. If you already have Plan F, you may keep it. Plan F is popular because it offers the most comprehensive coverage.

Plan F covers:

  • 100% of Part A coinsurance and hospital costs for 365 extra days
  • 100% of Part B coinsurance or copayments
  • The first 3 pints of blood each year
  • Hospice care coinsurance
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • The Part A deductible
  • The Part B deductible
  • 100% of Part B excess charges
  • 80% of foreign travel emergency costs after a $250 deductible (lifetime max $50,000)

Important Notes for Medicare Supplement Plan F (2025):

  • Plan F is not available to anyone who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. If you were eligible before that date, you can still purchase Plan F, even if you enrolled later. If you already have Plan F, you can keep it.
  • Plan F is the most comprehensive Medigap plan for those who are eligible, covering all out-of-pocket costs under Original Medicare, including both Part A and Part B deductibles and Part B excess charges.
  • A high-deductible version of Plan F (HD F) is available. With this option, you pay Medicare-covered costs up to the $2,870 deductible in 2025 before the plan begins paying.
  • Medicare Supplement plans, including Plan F, do not cover outpatient prescription drugs. A separate Medicare Part D plan is needed for drug coverage.
  • Premiums for Plan F are typically the highest among Medigap plans because of its extensive coverage. Premiums vary by insurance company, location, age, gender, tobacco use, and other factors.
  • Because new beneficiaries can no longer enroll in Plan F, the pool of members is shrinking. This may result in higher premium increases over time compared to plans like Plan G, which continue accepting new enrollees.
  • Some states have different Medigap structures. Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin use their own standardized plan formats.
